Dublin councils to crack down on private waste firms

The four local authorities in Dublin have announced plans to curtail private waste collection in the city.

At present, a number of private operators are competing with the local councils and each other for business throughout the city.

However, the local authorities have now decided that they will either collect household rubbish themselves or else licence a single private firm to serve a particular area after a tendering process.

Dublin City Council says the current situation is chaotic and it will now be reviewing existing waste licences in an effort to bring order to the system.

The waste management companies contend that this is uncompetitive, and are considering legal options to oppose the move.
