Six Nato troops were killed in a suicide car bombing in Kabul today, five of them American.

Afghan officials said the bombing also killed at least 12 Afghan civilians and injured 47.

Nato said the explosion damaged five of its vehicles in a convoy and more than a dozen civilian vehicles.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for today's attack which was aimed at the convoy.

A spokesman said the bomber was a man from Kabul and his car was packed with 1,650lbs of explosive.

President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack.

“There were casualties among the Nato forces as well as among civilians - women, children and schoolchildren,” he said.

The area around the blast site is home to Afghan government buildings, including the ministry of energy and water.

It was the first major attack in Kabul since February when suicide bombers struck two small hotels in the city centre. That attack killed 16 people and led Afghan police to promise better security and surveillance.

It was the deadliest attack for Nato in the capital since a September suicide bombing that killed six Italian soldiers.
