The Whistling Teal relished the testing underfoot conditions at Newbury on Saturday to collect the Group Three Electricity Direct St Simon Stakes in workmanlike fashion.
Trained by Geoff Wragg, the six-year-old battled gamely for Darryll Holland inside the final furlong to thwart Warrsan and Nysaean by three quarters of a length and a head respectively.
Newmarket-based Wragg reported: "He's a marvellous old boy who is a model of consistency. We've been waiting to get some soft ground for him like today as it's really been too firm for him in some of his other races."
The Whistling Teal was formerly handled by retired trainer Julian Smythe-Osbourne and joined Wragg last year as a handicapper before graduating through the ranks to this Group success.
Winning rider Holland said: "It was a real grind to the line for him but he kept pulling out more for me. Last year I told the owners I thought he could win a Group race and he proved it today."
Not so lucky was Michael Hills, rider of unplaced Kasthari as the stewards found his mount had interfered with Sunny Glenn soon after the start and banned him for four days (November 4-7) as they considered he was guilty of minor irresponsible riding.
Dumaran could be heading for a spell over hurdles this winter after rallying back past Unshakable for Liam Keniry to lift the Tote Scoop6 Rated Stakes by a short head.
The winner's trainer Ian Balding said: "His owner Jeremy Hitchins is keen to go hurdling this winter and I think he would make a marvellous jumper."
The stewards considered Keniry had used his whip with excessive frequency and without time to respond on the winner and banned him for one day (November 4)
Richard Quinn partnered his 100th winner on turf this season after newcomer Zeis landed the TFM Cyntergy Maiden Stakes by a length from Anani for trainer Henry Cecil.
