A Chinese national is to go on trial accused of the murder of a man in Dublin city centre in May.

Noel Fagan (aged 40) was attacked as he emerged from an internet cafe on Wellington Quay at around 4pm on May 20 last.

Mr Fagan, who was originally from Finglas in Dublin, was rushed to St James's Hospital but died from his injuries.

Zhen Zhao (aged 34), with an address at Jervis Street in Dublin 1, had initially been charged with the manslaughter of Mr Fagan but the case was later upgraded to murder.

He appeared again at Dublin District Court today where he was served with a book of evidence.

Judge Aingeal Ni Chonduin was told that the DPP had directed that Mr Zhao was to be “sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court”.

As conditions of bail he has been ordered to reside at his current address, obey a curfew from 10pm to 8am and sign on daily at Store Street Garda station.

He was also notified that if he intended to use an alibi in his defence, he must inform the prosecution within 14 days.

He remained silent during the brief proceedings today as Judge Ni Chonduin ordered that he was to go forward for trial at the present term of the Central Criminal Court.

The judge also agreed to a request from defence solicitor John Bermingham to grant legal aid to the accused.
