Backpacker's family in Australia for murder trial

The family of a missing British backpacker arrived in Australia today for the trial of a mechanic accused of murdering him on a lonely stretch of Outback highway in 2001.

The family of a missing British backpacker arrived in Australia today for the trial of a mechanic accused of murdering him on a lonely stretch of Outback highway in 2001.

Bradley John Murdoch, who has been charged with the murder of 28-year-old Peter Falconio, will face trial on October 17 in the northern Australian city of Darwin.

Murdoch is suspected of shooting Falconio after flagging down the camper van he was travelling in with girlfriend Joanne Lees on July 14, 2001.

Falconio’s body has never been found despite a police search covering an area of the Outback the size of France involving aircraft, police on motorcycles and Aboriginal trackers.
