Cahill try sinks Con

Veteran prop Martin Cahill scored a crucial second half try as Buccaneers overturned last season's semi-final result with this defeat of Cork Constitution.

'The General', capped by both Munster and Connacht in his career, was driven over on 65 minutes as Buccs began their 2004/05 campaign in style.

Con's record points scorer Pat McCarthy pinged over an early penalty to give the visitors the lead at Dubarry Park. But Buccs' Justin Meagher quickly replied as he finished off a move created by man-of-the-match scrum-half Chris Keane on 22 minutes.

Full-back Meagher converted and added two further penalties, cancelling out a well-taken drop goal by Barry Keeshan, one of Con's three new UCC recruits, for a 13-6 half-time lead.

Cahill's effort pushed John McKee's side further in front, and although McCarthy predictably kicked Con back within a score with two more penalties, Buccs deservedly held on.

Scorers:

Buccaneers: Tries: Justin Meagher, Martin Cahill; Con: Justin Meagher; Pens: Justin Meagher 2

Cork Con: Pens: Pat McCarthy 3; Drop gl: Barry Keeshan
