Bellamy boost for Liverpool

Craig Bellamy could be back in action in time for Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final with Chelsea.

The Wales striker was carried off in the first-half of last night’s quarter-final second leg victory over PSV Eindhoven, and boss Rafael Benitez initially feared he would need a scan to establish the damage.

However, after further assessment by Liverpool’s medical team today, that was felt to be unnecessary.

Bellamy is now undergoing intensive treatment on what has been confirmed as a medial knee ligament injury.

A club spokesman said: “Craig will have a couple of days intensive treatment which should improve the situation.”

Bellamy will miss Saturday’s Barclays Premiership trip to Manchester City and probably Wednesday’s home match with Middlesbrough.

But he could be fit to face Wigan three days later, which would put him in contention for the first leg at Chelsea on May 25.

The general view at Liverpool is that the injury is not as serious as first thought, despite the player lasting only 15 minutes of the 1-0 victory over PSV.
