I reacted poorly, says banned Henson

A contrite Gavin Henson claims he "fully accepts" the two-match Heineken Cup ban imposed on him by the Ospreys.

A contrite Gavin Henson claims he "fully accepts" the two-match Heineken Cup ban imposed on him by the Ospreys.

The Wales centre will miss tomorrow's Pool Three opener against Leicester at Welford Road, plus a home appointment with Perpignan next Saturday.

Henson started only his first game in six months last Sunday, when the Ospreys needed a converted injury-time try to edge out EDF Energy Cup opponents Harlequins.

The Ospreys have now omitted him from their selection plans until later this month.

Henson said: "Having received feedback from team management earlier in the week as part of a review of the Ospreys' last home game, I reacted poorly and additionally took unauthorised leave to consider the matters raised.

"Having signed up to the Ospreys' code of conduct introduced earlier this year, I was part of a disciplinary decision from the Ospreys leadership group which consists of senior players and rugby management.

"I fully accept this decision and entirely support the penalty imposed, and very much look forward to rejoining my team-mates on the field."

Henson's place in midfield tomorrow is taken by Andrew Bishop, whose centre partner will be former Ulster wing Tommy Bowe.

Leicester boss Heyneke Meyer, meanwhile, will make rugby history this season if the Tigers land their third European title.

Meyer gets his first taste of the Heineken Cup tomorrow, and it is the start of a road South African Meyer hopes will lead to Edinburgh next May, venue for this season's final.

Should Leicester land a trophy they last won in 2002, then Meyer will become the first coach to mastermind Super 14 and Heineken Cup title triumphs.

"The Heineken Cup was one of the attractions for me coming to work in Europe," said the former Blue Bulls chief.

"It is a huge challenge for any team - a round-robin competition and a knockout competition all in one.

"That makes it a really tough tournament to win, and you need to be 100% in every game.

"I've been involved in the top competition in the southern hemisphere, and I am looking forward to being involved in the top competition in the northern hemisphere."

Leicester have started solidly under Meyer's direction, winning four of their first five Guinness Premiership games, but the Ospreys will prove a step up from domestic business if they hit top form.

Josh Lewsey and Danny Cipriani are united in the Wasps back division against Adams Park visitors Castres tomorrow, just four days after their much-publicised training ground spat.

It is only Cipriani's second appearance since recovering from an horrific ankle injury as Wasps look to shake off poor Premiership form and make a strong start in Pool Two.

Wasps rugby director Ian McGeechan said: "For any side, it will, in the early stages of the campaign, be crucial to utilise their home ties while playing smart on the road.

"It is important for us to make a strong start."

Elsewhere tomorrow, Bath facing a testing encounter with last season's runners-up Toulouse in France, while tournament favourites Saracens launch their European Challenge Cup campaign at home to French side Mont de Marsan.
