A first-time visor sparked Allegretto back to life as the filly ground out victory in the Group Two WBX.COM Henry II Stakes at Sandown.
Sir Michael Stoute’s inmate, winner of last summer’s Lancashire Oaks, ran below form on her first crack at a stayers’ prize when fifth in the Yorkshire Cup.
She was sent off a 12-1 chance as a consequence, but the mount of Seb Sanders relished the extended two-mile trip.
And after duelling with Balkan Knight up the hill, she stayed best for a three-quarter-length call.
Bulwark was a further length and a half back in third, with stablemate and 5-2 favourite, Tungsten Strike, fading into fifth, having led until two furlongs from home.
Chris Richardson, managing director for Allegretto’s owners Cheveley Park Stud, said: “That was fantastic – she’s so game.
“She stayed every yard of the trip. She does nothing at home and there’s not a lot of her, but she’s so tough.
“I was slightly concerned about the ground, but she travelled so well and the visor has obviously made a difference.”
Coral and William Hill cut the filly into 16-1 from 33s for the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot next month, with VC Bet slightly bigger at 20-1.
Charlie Farnsbarns, runner-up to Vodafone Derby favourite Authorized when last seen in the Racing Post Trophy, tasted defeat on his seasonal bow in the Bet Now At WBX.COM Heron Stakes.
Brian Meehan’s 2-5 favourite went under by a neck as he failed to reel in the front-running Massive (12-1) under Darryll Holland.
Winning trainer Mick Channon’s assistant George Peckham said: “The ground was too fast for him at Newmarket last time, but the ground here and the mile trip was perfect for him.
“He kept sticking his head out and has done it very well.
“I am not sure of plans but he deserves to move up to Group races now.”
Meehan added of the runner-up: “I am delighted with him. He wants to step up to a mile and a quarter now, and I’ll think about the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot.”
William Jarvis’ hot-streak continued apace when the Newmarket trainer saddled Killena Boy (5-2) to a ready three-length success under Paul Doe in the Join WBX.COM For £150 In Free Bets Handicap.
Jarvis said: “This is a hard game and you have to make the most of any purple patch.
“This is a brave little horse, and he had to be as he got a smack across the nose in the final furlong.
“He doesn’t like straight courses so I might give Ascot a miss, but we may take him to Goodwood.”
Presto Levanter bounced back from a disappointing effort at York to prove a different class in the WBX.COM World Bet Exchange EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.
Richard Hannon’s 3-1 favourite trailed home last of 10 runners on the Knavesmire but was on top of her game at the Esher venue.
The daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar cruised along at the head of affairs in the five-furlong dash and never saw another rival with a cosy length-and-a-half defeat of newcomer High Days.
Hannon said: “I don’t know what happened at York, but I guess it was loose ground that got her beat.
“She was back to herself though, but I’m not too sure where we’ll go next.”
Eddie Ahern partnered the easiest winner of the meeting as the Clive Brittain-trained Sahrati (9-2) bolted up by three and a half lengths in the WBX.COM We Will Match Your Commission Rate Handicap.
Frankie Dettori, having his first rides back following a nasty fall at Goodwood on Friday, finished in the second spot for the fourth time in the WBX.COM Keeping Commission Rates Low Maiden Stakes.
His mount, Spring City, travelled like a dream in the 10-furlong heat but Stoute and Sanders spoiled the party when doubling up with Winter Sunrise (9-1), who held the Italian by three-quarters of a length.
