As counting continued around the country this afternoon, signs emerged that a number of high-profile candidates appear unlikely to make it to the 30th Dáil.

The PDs were danger of losing at least three seats, include Mae Sexton in Longford Westmeath, Tim O'Malley in Limerick East and Liz O'Donnell in Dublin South.

In Louth, the Fine Gael's plan to run Mairead McGuinness appeared to have failed - she all but conceded defeat:

"I always did say it was going to be tough," the MEP said.

"Fianna Fáil managed their vote extraordinarily well."

In Wexford, Fine Gael's Health spokesman Liam Twomey appeared to be in trouble, while in Dublin Sinn Féin TD Sean Crowe lost his seat.
