Widdecombe banking on public support

Ann Widdecombe needs public support yet again tonight if she is to continue on 'Strictly Come Dancing'.

Despite avoiding the temptation to begin with a flying trapeze or be dragged around the dancefloor as in previous weeks, the former Tory MP still failed when it came to the judges' scores.

Widdecombe's foxtrot was described as "laboured" and "disorientated" as she was awarded 20 points out of a possible 40 on last night's show.

The 63-year-old wore a pink dress and shawl as she danced to Frank Sinatra's 'You Make Me Feel So Young' with partner Anton du Beke.

Head judge Len Goodman reflected: "I'm not going to analyse what you do. I'll just sit back and enjoy it and you'll be on this show as long as the public wants to see you."

Bruno Tonioli added: "Obviously it's still very, very laboured, and you keep looking down between your legs."

But Widdecombe won applause from the audience when she replied: "Well that's to see where my feet are going."

Craig Revel Horwood told her: "You look very disorientated."

Meanwhile, Alesha Dixon praised her for "doing a real dance".

'EastEnders' actor Scott Maslen did the final dance of the night, and it turned out to be the best.

His jive with Natalie Lowe earned an almost-perfect score of 39 - with Revel Horwood being booed after delivering his nine out of 10.

Maslen sported a gold shirt and black tie and trousers as he put in a sublime performance to the Ray Charles classic 'Hit The Road Jack'.

Goodman said afterwards: "What I love about dancing is when you dance right on the edge.

"When you dance on the edge you can go wrong. It's not safe. It's full-out. It's flat-out and that's what you did, and I loved it."

It was a top-two result for 'EastEnders' as former star Kara Tointon was a single point behind Maslen with 38.

Wearing a slashed purple dress, she began the Argentine Tango with a dazzling pole dancing routine against a hat stand before joining Artem Chigvintsev on the dancefloor.

Tonight it will be revealed who is to be eliminated before the show goes to the Blackpool Tower Ballroom next week.
