The Irish Nurses Organisation is meeting officials from the Eastern Regional Health Authority today to discuss ongoing nursing shortages in Irish hospitals.

The INO said severe staff shortages over the past four years have led to bed closures and cutbacks in services in most Irish hospitals.

Spokesperson Mary Fogarty said: “Health employers have got to bring in measures which will attract and retain nurses within the health service.

"They’ve got to look at the salary scales, they’ve got to bring in a Dublin allowance, they have to look at initiatives like a loyalty bonus for staff and also they have to look at rostering arrangements that are not flexible enough for nurses.”
