Sarkozy: EU was mistaken to let Greece in

The French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said it was a mistake to have allowed Greece enter the euro in 2001.

The French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said it was a mistake to have allowed Greece enter the euro in 2001.

Mr Sarkozy said it was an error because Greece entered with false economic figures and was not ready.

He said Europe avoided a "catastrophe" by reaching a deal to tackle its debt crises on Wednesday night and he was confident that Greece would emerge from the crisis.

France, the Eurozone's second-largest economy, has lowered its own economic growth forecast for next year to just 1%.

The French President has also warned of significant budgetary cuts ahead.
