Gardaí get €6.5m anti-gang fund to tackle Dublin crime

The Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell has announced the Government is giving the gardaí €6.5m to tackle organised crime in Dublin.

The Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell has announced the Government is giving the gardaí €6.5m to tackle organised crime in Dublin.

Mr McDowell has told the Dáil a new campaign "Operation Anvil" has started and is already targeting criminal gangs in the capital.

It is a response to the spiraling level of violence in the city.

The Minister has also said the law is to be changed to deal with gang warfare. A new offence is to be created for sawing off the barrel of a shotgun.
