Six Nations: Henderson aiming for four Six Nations wins

Hat-trick hero Rob Henderson played down his own contribution to Ireland's win over Italy in Rome.

Hat-trick hero Rob Henderson played down his own contribution to Ireland's win over Italy in Rome.

Instead he talked up his team's title prospects after helping Ireland to an opening championship victory for the first time for 13 years.

The Wasps centre opened his Six Nations account in devastating fashion at Stadio Flaminio, the graveyard for Scottish hopes 12 months earlier, to help maintain the new buoyancy in Irish rugby.

Warren Gatland's men will go into the clash with France at Lansdowne Road on Saturday week in confident mood.

"We can win at least four of the five games if we play to our potential each game," insisted Henderson.

With Brian O'Driscoll and Denis Hickie poised to return against the French, it is no wonder there is a new spring in the Irish step.

Mike Mullins is likely to make way for O'Driscoll but Henderson admitted that even his hat-trick heroics may not guarantee his place in the side.

"There's a lot of competition, a lot of strength in depth," he said. "That's why the province and the national team are playing so well.

"Brian O is a brilliant player and players like him and Denis Hickie are fantastic additions to any team. They'd get into most teams and can only strengthen us.

"Have I cemented my place in team? I wouldn't have thought so. It's a question of who the management want to play against France. You have different teams, different permutations depending on the opposition. I'll have to wait and see."
