Finnan move may make Carragher middle man, says Rush

Liverpool legend Ian Rush claims Jamie Carragher’s future could now be in the heart of defence following the £3.5m (€4.9m) arrival of Steve Finnan.

Liverpool legend Ian Rush claims Jamie Carragher’s future could now be in the heart of defence following the £3.5m (€4.9m) arrival of Steve Finnan.

Defender Carragher looks likely to lose his right-back spot to the Irish international – who will formally complete his move from Fulham at the end of the month.

But Rush, speaking on the club’s website www.liverpoolfc.tv, believes Finnan is a shrewd buy and that Carragher’s versatility will ensure he has a big future still at Anfield.

Welshman Rush, now Liverpool’s striking coach, said: “People will wonder what his arrival means for Jamie Carragher.

“For me, Jamie has been one of Liverpool’s most consistent players for the last couple of seasons.

“It should not be forgotten, however, that he can also play very well at centre-back and will give Gerard Houllier another option there.”

And on Finnan’s arrival, Rush added: “Finnan is an international and has Premiership experience with Fulham. Coming to Liverpool is a big move for him and a lot is to be expected from him.

“He is one of those full-backs that likes to get forward and that will give the Liverpool’s attack another option.

“With Finnan and John Arne Riise getting down the flanks, it will give opposing teams a lot to worry about.”
