Shels left it late as goals from Jason Byrne and Stuart Byrne gave the champions a deserved win at the Brandywell.

It was 57 minutes before Steve Williams’ mistake gifted Derry debutant Alan Murphy the opening chance, but Shels’ defender Jamie Harris got his body in the way.

That brought the game to life and Shels hit back at the other end with Jason Byrne shaving the Derry crossbar from 25 yards.

Byrne then finally opened the scoring on 81 minutes when heading home David Crawley’s cross.

Stuart Byrne sealed the win two minutes from time when drilling home after great work down the left byGlen Fitzpatrick.
