Dublin-based Setanta Media has acquired the rights to broadcast World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) pay-per-view events in the UK and Ireland.

The rights were previously held by BSkyB. Regular wrestling matches will continue to be screened on Sky One and Sky Sports.

The contract runs for one year and Setanta has not revealed the cost of the deal. It is thought to be several million euro. The first pay-per-view event to be carried by Setanta will be the "Royal Rumble", set to take place on January 25.

Wall street listed WWE is headed by ex-wrestler Mr Vincent McMahon and is one of the world's biggest sporting bodies. Setanta Media is a subsidiary of Setanta Sport, one of the world's largest independent closed circuit satellite broadcasters.
