Henrik Stenson, who ended last month’s US Open with a cut hand after breaking a club in anger, today ran up the highest score of this week’s Open – a sextuple bogey 11 on the long 14th.

Joint third at St Andrews last year and at Birkdale in 2008, the Swede blasted two drives out of bounds, then put his sixth shot into the Suez Canal that runs across the fairway.

He finished with an 80, three worse than his previous highest round in The Open, but three fewer than he took on the first day of The Masters in April.

The 35-year-old chose not to speak to reporters afterwards and picked up his own clubs after signing his card rather than asking caddie Fanny Sunesson to do it.
