Giovanni Trapattoni urged the Republic of Ireland to look forward to the resumption of Euro 2012 qualifying with confidence after tonight’s convincing win over Wales.
Irish boss Trapattoni watched with satisfaction as his team produced a strong second-half display to crush the Welsh 3-0 in the Carling Nations Cup opener in Dublin.
Brilliant strikes from Darron Gibson and Keith Fahey and another goal from the outstanding Damien Duff condemned Gary Speed to defeat in his first match as Wales manager.
Ireland now turn their attention to the visit of Macedonia next month as they look to build on their solid start in Group B of Euro 2012 qualifying.
Trapattoni said: “Macedonia play different football but we have to believe we have the potential.
“Our team is a good team and we can play good football.
“It is just a pity some of our players only play a few times for their club because I am sure if our players played more we would be even stronger.”
Ireland were without the likes of Robbie Keane, Aiden McGeady and Kevin Kilbane but, in Duff, had one senior player in outstanding form.
The Fulham winger provided the hosts’ attacking inspiration until being substituted shortly after a 66th-minute goal his performance deserved.
Trapattoni said: “I saw his last game for his club and he was fantastic. God forbid any more injuries to him.
“He gives the team personality, this is important.
“Players like him are very important at international level and we can win with players like him.
“We need one or two more players like him.”
Two other players to impress Trapattoni were debutants Seamus Coleman and Ciaran Clark, of Everton and Aston Villa respectively.
“It was important to see them in this competition,” said Trapattoni.
“With the performance of these two players I am very happy.”
