Percussionist out of classic contention

A slight setback has ruled Percussionist out of Saturday’s betfair.com St Leger at Doncaster.

A slight setback has ruled Percussionist out of Saturday’s betfair.com St Leger at Doncaster.

The John Gosden-trained colt, who was a best-priced 12-1 chance with William Hill, was not among the final 10 declarations for the final Classic of the season today.

Percussionist, who is owned by the Sangster family, was fourth in the Derby at Epsom but was tailed off in the Irish equivalent on his last start.

“He does not run. His bloods are slightly off so at the moment we are monitoring them. If he were to do a nice piece of work next week he might run in the Arc Trial at Newbury,” said Ben Sangster.

“I spoke to John Gosden this morning and his white cell count is high, quite how high I don’t know, but he thinks the problem can be rectified over the weekend with a little bit of luck.”

Ante-post favourite Rule Of Law heads the acceptors and the Godolphin colt, who will be partnered by Kerrin McEvoy, is the 7-4 market leader with Ladbrokes after his success in the Great Voltigeur Stakes last time.

Quiff, impressive 11-length winner of the Yorkshire Oaks and general second-favourite, has been declared despite worries over the drying ground on Town Moor.

Connections had been hoping for some rain or that some watering would be done on the track but John Sanderson, chief executive at the track, is not planning to water.

He said: “Yesterday’s sun and wind would have dried it up slightly but we had a very heavy dew and we have rolled it to bring the moisture to the top, so I don’t envisage any appreciable change (in the going).

“They have declared Quiff in the hope that rain arrives and, while we might have to rely on the almighty, we still have the first three from York’s Great Voltigeur Stakes, which I always maintain is the best St Leger trial.”

Quiff will be the mount of Kieren Fallon as she tries to become the first filly since User Friendly in 1992 to win the world’s oldest Classic.

She is trained by Sir Michael Stoute and he will be double-handed as Maraahel will also line up in a race he has yet to win.

Let The Lion Roar, who has finished behind Rule Of Law four times already this season, will try to emulate his half-brother Millenary, who was successful on Town Moor in 2000.

Aidan O’Brien has three runners – Tycoon, Go For Gold and Mikado.

Stable jockey Jamie Spencer is in action at Leopardstown so Darryll Holland, Seb Sanders and Jimmy Fortune take the rides respectively.

Holland’s agent Matt Chapman said: “Darryll is thrilled to have got the ride on Tycoon.

“As a team we have to thank the trainers who let him off horses he had previously been booked for at Goodwood this weekend as they were all very understanding about the late switch.

“The call for Tycoon came out the blue, although Aidan knew Darryll was keen to ride the horse.”

Tycoon was last in the Juddmonte International at York last time but previously he had run a fine race when third in the Irish Derby and he was an unlucky sixth in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes.

Chapman added: “As a freelance jockey it is very hard to get a mount in a Classic with a serious chance, and Tycoon provides Dazzler with an excellent opportunity.

“He’s been second and third in the last two St Legers with Highest and Phoenix Reach – it’s time he got the famous cap!”

The Mick Quinlan-trained Frank Sonata takes his chance after winning the Listed July Trophy at Haydock.

Albinus, who was third in that race, has been declared by trainer Andrew Balding but his run is dependent on the ground.

“We have declared Albinus to run in the Leger but he will only run on the proviso that the ground remains predominately good,” a stable spokeswoman said.

The Czech-trained Darsalam, a rank outsider, completes the line-up.
