Baros reunites with Houllier at Lyon

Milan Baros has left Aston Villa to join French champions Lyon.

Milan Baros has left Aston Villa to join French champions Lyon.

The move reunites the Czech Republic striker with Gerard Houllier, who brought him to England while Liverpool manager.

The 25-year-old has spent the last season and a half at Villa Park after leaving the Reds for £6.5m (€10m).

Lyon, runaway Ligue 1 leaders in their bid for six straight championships, announced the move on their website.

Baros proved a disappointing acquisition for Villa after signing in the wake of Liverpool's 2005 Champions League win.

He managed just nine Premiership goals in 42 appearances compared to the 19 in 68 in his three and a half years at Anfield.

Brought to Villa Park by David O'Leary, his future has been in doubt since the arrival of new boss Martin O'Neill in the summer.

It was a similar tale at Liverpool, where Houllier signed him for £3.6m (€5.5m) in December 2001, the season after the Reds won an historic cup treble.

A raw 20-year-old, Baros was never quite able to replicate his sensational international form in the Premiership and was forced to play second fiddle to the more prolific Michael Owen.

Owen's departure at the start of his final season thrust Baros into the spotlight, but new manager Rafael Benitez appeared determined to end his stay at the club.
