Liverpool today learned Harry Kewell will miss tomorrow’s Barclaycard Premiership showdown with Newcastle and is likely to be out for another three weeks with an ankle injury.

The Australian picked up the problem in Wednesday’s Carling Cup defeat at home to Bolton.

Kewell joins Michael Owen, Milan Baros, Jamie Carragher, Stephane Henchoz and Steve Finnan on the Reds’ injury list.

It all means Anthony Le Tallec could come in at St James Park – while teenage full-back Jon Otsemobor could come in at right-back for his league debut.

Dietmar Hamann, Sami Hyypia and Steven Gerrard, none of whom was in the starting line-up against Bolton, will return.

Provisional squad: Kirkland, Otsemobor, Hyypia, Biscan, Riise, Le Tallec, Diouf, Smicer, Gerrard, Murphy, Hamann, Heskey, Sinama-Pongolle, Diao, Traore, Dudek, Cheyrou, Luzi.
