Heartbreaking last-minute goal denies Ireland women result against Germany

Republic of Ireland 2 Germany 3

Ireland’s women were denied a famous result against the second-best team in the World in a freak stoppage-time winner.

Stephanie Roche looked to have given Ireland a famous draw with just two minutes on the clock, when Melaine Leupolz struck a wind-assisted winner.

It was an undeserved victory for the eight times European champions who were made look an average team by a hungry Irish side.

Louise Quinn gave the hosts a shock lead with just two minutes on the clock, the first goal that the eight time European champions conceded in this campaign.

Ireland’s centre backs combined with Megan Campbell dispatching a Rory Delap style long throw with Quinn heading past German World player of the year Nadine Angerer.

The German’s ranked number two in the World, where kept at bay by a resilient Irish defence with Emma Byrne only called upon once in the first period.

Louise Quinn’s miss kick saw Lena Goebling play Simone Laudehr in. The Irish captain was quick to close out the danger and saved with her legs.

Germany got back on level terms on 65 minutes, when goalscorer Louise Quinn took Simone Laudehr down in the box.

Annike Laudehr gave Emma Byrne no chance driving the penalty high in the top corner of the Arsenal stoppers net.

The German’s took a controversial lead on 84 minutes. Melanie Leupolz and Emma Byrne got caught up in a scramble from a corner, with Leupolz popping the ball home.

The Irish captain was furious as she appeared to be fouled. Her complaints to Italian referee Carina Susanna Vitulano went unheard, claiming a foul on the Irish stopper.

It wasn’t the end of the drama as Stephanie Roche forced an equaliser with just two minutes of normal time remaining.

Megan Campbell again was provider with a long throw with Roche tapping slamming the ball home from close range.

The Irish were set for a share of the spoils only Melanie Leupolz cross come shot flying over a scrambling Emma Byrne for the win.

Ireland remain in second place in group one of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 qualifying with seven points, Germany top the group with 18 points, a 100% record.
