Mayo record first O'Mahony win

Mayo registered their first win under new manager John O'Mahony as they saw off Roscommon 0-15 to 0-9 in Ballyhaunis.

With victories this afternoon for Galway and Sligo IT dashing any hopes Mayo had of qualifying for the Connacht FBD League final, O'Mahony's charges can still be encouraged with this display and getting one over on their former boss John Maughan.

Showing much more urgency than they did against Sligo IT during the week, Mayo fought back from an early deficit to lead 0-7 to 0-4 at the break.

Maughan's Roscommon side, which was without their All-Ireland title chasing representatives from St Brigid's, clicked well in the opening minutes with Ger Heneghan, their stand-out player, and Michael Finneran both firing over points.

Their lead was a short-lived one and Mayo, with David Brady on top at midfield, took over when Michael Conroy nudged them ahead in the 18th minute.

Aidan Kilcoyne's six-point tally, which included three frees late in the first half, helped Mayo go on to dominate proceedings.

Heneghan also finished with six points, while Gary Cox (0-2) also showed some accurate shot-taking for Roscommon. Cox helped the visitors reduce the gap to two points early in the second half, but Mayo then hit six points on the trot to take charge.

Conroy (0-2), Austin O'Malley, Aidan Campbell and Kilcoyne (0-2) pushed Mayo into a 0-13 to 0-5 lead. Heneghan (0-2) and Cox did rattle off three points in the closing five minutes, but Roscommon lacked the firepower to mount a concerted comeback.

Billy Joe Padden was tried out as a centre back by O'Mahony during the game and the Belmullet clubman showed well in a half-back line that included Gary Mullins and Peadar Gardiner.
